WHAT IS FAB LAB?

Hi, how’s it going? My name is Alba Huddleston and I’m an Industrial Engineer.

The Fab Lab is an initiative by Chevron of advanced manufacturing laboratories that started opening inside Community Colleges 2 to 3 years ago, with the idea of having manufacture, building, and trade knowledge to small communities.

Focusing on people and students, so that instead of going to a 4-year college, they can focus on trade, like carpentry, plumbing, but now using new technology.

Fab Lab is a workshop where Delgado students can come and learn all these skills, and they have a schedule free to the public for the community to come and learn, build, and use all the machines here after receiving training.

Labs like this one, where you combine the new technologies with trade learning are important because they help minorities and lower-income families to have an education in a short time that will produce a good salary.

There are classes where you can learn how to use a 3D printer, how to use a die cutting machine, how to use a laser cutting machine, and all this information is at the Delgado’s website. http://www.dcc.edu

All you have to do is register to the classes which are free and at night, and you will leave with the basic knowledge of how to use the machinery and learn graphic design to use the other machines.

The Fab Lab es una iniciativa de Chevron y los laboratorios de fabricación avanzada que comenzó a abrirse dentro de Community Colleges hace 2 o 3 años, con la idea de aportar conocimientos de fabricación, construcción y comercio para comunidades pequeñas.

Enfocándonos en las personas y los estudiantes, para que en lugar de ir a una universidad de 4 años, puedan enfocarse en un oficio, como carpintería, plomería, pero ahora utilizando nuevas tecnologías.

Fab Lab es un taller donde los estudiantes de Delgado pueden venir y aprender todas estas habilidades, y tienen un horario gratuito para que la comunidad venga y aprenda, construya y use todas las máquinas que tenemos, después de recibir capacitación.

Los laboratorios como este, donde se combinan las nuevas tecnologías con el aprendizaje, son importantes porque ayudan a las minorías y las familias de bajos ingresos a tener una educación en poco tiempo que les producirá un buen salario.

Hay clases donde puede aprender cómo usar una impresora 3D, cómo usar una máquina troqueladora, cómo usar una cortadora láser y toda esta información se encuentra en el sitio web de Delgado. http://www.dcc.edu

Todo lo que tiene que hacer es registrarse en las clases que son gratuitas en la noche, y se irá con los conocimientos básicos de cómo usar la maquinaria y aprenderá además diseño gráfico para sus proyectos.
